North of Houston, Texas; The Woodlands is home to the 2013 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas. A crazy triathlon, athletes begin with a 2.4-mile swim, 112-miles on bicycle and ending with a 26.2-mile marathon. Participants have exactly 17 hours to finish and only 50 qualifiers go on to the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii. 2,818 competed and I was lucky enough to photograph one of these entrants on his 140.6 mile virgin IRONMAN run. I have never seen anything like this race and it is truly a feat beyond belief. One word-Atmosphere!
Now, meet James Oltman, "Odie" is what everyone knows him as. First time IRONMAN competitor, and 3 years ago he weighed 281 pounds. Odie is my best friends big Brother and I always remember him being bigger, that has all changed however and he is now a slim & forever changed, triathlon competitor. Family & Friends gathered from several states to support him and we even had angels with us on race day, as we were amazingly able to locate our IRONODIE 3 times on the bike course, and create some beautiful images.
Here are his words as he explained his amazing journey to me:
Amber (Kunc) Shane grew up on a small farm near Wilber, NE and graduated from Wilber-Clatonia High School in 2000, where she was active in 4-H and FFA. In 2002, she graduated from Southeast Community College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Diversified Ag & Crops. In 2004, she broke her back in a farming accident and rushed to graduate from UNL with a Bachelor's degree in Ag Business & Ag Economics. Upon graduation she moved to Atkinson with fiancé Perry Shane and began working at the Tri-County Bank in Stuart & Atkinson until the birth of her third child in 2009. Holt County was not new to Amber when she moved here. Growing up she would visit cousins that lived in Stuart.
Amber has owned and operated Silver Star Photography since 2008, 2 years later she moved her home studio to a one room school house located on the family farm. Photography is a lifelong passion of Amber's that has given her the flexibility to enjoy her growing family, help on the family farm, continue her education and share her love of photography and agriculture with others. She grows her business through word of mouth referrals and the support of our local communities. Amber is an active member of The Professional Photographers of America, The Professional Photographers of Nebraska and is the Area Coordinator for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep- a non-profit organization that offers infant remembrance photography to families with a baby incompatible with life. She has worked with Avera St Anthony's Hospital in bereavement training for nurses and staff. Amber has also attended the Creative Academy of Midwest Professional Photography, Mid-America Institute of Professional Photography and Kansas Professional Photographers School.
Amber and Perry married in 2005. They have 4 boys, Oliver (6), Ian (4), Case (3) and Holt (10 months). They live North of Atkinson on the farm where Perry works with his parents & uncles-raising corn, soybeans, dairy-quality alfalfa, cattle, hogs & horses. The family enjoys Mack, a 2 year old Border collie and a brand new Bernese mountain puppy, snowmobiling, tractor pulling & rebuilding antique tractors. Amber also enjoys trap shooting, deer hunting and reading.

My little brother (younger, but much taller) and his beautiful fiance Melanie! They grew up not far from each other and one day, well they just realized that the person they were looking for was almost in their back yard! I’m so glad that they found true love and both are close to home. Congrats you two!

I love how they look at each other, I noticed this when we did their engagement session. They look at each other with such an admiration and spark in their eyes. I love their first look photos too, you can definitely see it here!
In preparation for a winter wedding, they used feathers blown through straws, instead of bubbles…looked just like fresh falling snow and such a cool idea!!!
]]>A beautiful birch tree. Perry showing off for me as the group heads back to the trailers. Just north of Walden, CO looking at my favorite view-the Rocky Mountains.
]]>
Another gorgeous Nebraska sunset. I was on my way home from a session and saw this view from my mailbox! It also is SOOC, so untweaked. I love how I caught the bird in the first one and the clouds covering the sun, just make it look steamy! And, of course our good old pivots show you just how rural we are!
]]>It was midnight, some guys were out night fishing and with others sleeping on the couch around us, we painted with an array of light and played until we came up with something cool! Each one of these pictures took from 3-5 people!

This couple did an absolutely amazing job! We traveled to a couple outdoor locations that are special to this couple and their families. We lucked out with the combine shots as it was broke down at the moment we stopped by to take pictures. The landscape provided beautiful surroundings and the light was gorgeous! These 2 are so sweet and in love and I can’t wait for their wedding day! I got a kick out of Greg trying to sneak his DeKalb hat in on a couple shots and Shalee laughing as she tried to get rid of it! They also weren’t afraid to try anything that I asked of them. Great job Greg & Shalee!
]]>
This sweet couple got married in an outdoor ceremony at Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park near Elyria, Nebraska on a cool and drizzly day. Despite the dampness it was an absolutely perfect and beautiful day, just like the bride-gorgeous!!! They say it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding day!!
We had taken their engagement pictures at the same place after some crazy Nebraska winds stirred up dust and cotton and temporarily stranded us indoors, so we knew the potential for beautiful portraits was definitely there. Some of my favorites are natural window light from inside the barracks.
Let’s give a cheer and blessing on many years of wedded bliss for Kayla and Cody! Congrats and thank you for letting me share in your special day!
]]>
Cody is the oldest of 3 boys in his family and I was excited to meet him and his Mom, because he was one of a couple of my 2012 Seniors that I didn’t know and I also have 3 boys in my family. He did a great job as we got to have a fun afternoon enjoying Eagle Springs Lodge, climbing Millett bales and getting locked out of our car in the middle of nowhere! Thanks Cody!
]]>
Cole got to spend a beautiful evening with his family for his senior portraits and family session. I was able to understand how passionate he is about bow hunting and his love of the outdoors. He did a wonderful job and it was fun to catch his little glimmer of smiles, even though he also has a great serious look. Thanks everyone!!
Each of these photographs is SOOC (strait out of the camer) using natural light! For the indoor photos, I upped the ISO setting and used window light from Ian’s right (camera left). You can tell the indoor images are more orange and warm, thanks to my orange wall!
You can tell Ian is a little apprehensive about his first day! Oliver was super excited to show off his back pack, thus his “pose” and as always, I am “in love” with his dimples!
Photographing Dan was fun and relaxed, just like his personality. I think he has a little bit of an ornery side, which I tend to think goes along with being a second child (even though technically he is the 3rd)-ha ha ha! You can see by his final pictures, just how fun he can be! I love how the first jumping picture, looks like he is grabbing the yield sign in the background! Dan even let me photograph his first tattoo, which I thought was pretty cool because he symbolized his family name, and to me is very important for people to appreciate !! Thanks so much Dan!

We had originally scheduled her pictures for July, on a day that was the hottest of the season. Thank goodness we changed the date, her new session was on a beautiful day. She has tons of great old buildings around her home that are full of character and exactly what I love.
She did a wonderful job and even got some help from her little sis. Jena and her siblings have all gotten close to my boys, as baby sitters, friends who help us on cattle drives & branding and just to come over and hang out!
Thanks Jena!
]]>
One of my favorites is the very middle picture, where Collin is playing with bark and the older two are wrestling in the background. Little boys, through and through!
]]>The old and fancy Ford trucks at the bottom were no match for Cameron’s driving skills. He started them right up and drove them into the pasture. Look at the trees in the background and see how much moisture was in the air the day we took these. It literally drizzled through the beginning hour of pictures and finally cleared off a bit!
We also had a great time hanging out with his family and hunting cool places for pictures on his Grandfather’s farm! Cameron did a great job and was so full of fun ideas!
]]>I had a blast hanging out with this adorable young man, checking out his Farmall Cub that they had gotten all ready for the day, playing in the trees and catching up with Mom and Dad. We walked around the yard and the farm and found some great places to take pictures. We even checked out their old barn and scaled around a little mud, as the rain had been making appearances and there was a thought that it might appear that evening, so it was definitely an adventure finding some fun backdrops. That is part of what I love about meeting with people where they live, each place is unique to them (and of course the people)! Thanks guys!!
]]>
We recently were able to spend a few days together in celebration of Ian’s 3rd Birthday. It was nice to be able to spend more than just a few hours together! The kids were definitely tuckered out at the end of each day. Can’t remember a time when we’ve ever heard more giggles!
This session brings tears to my eyes every time I look at the images. I’m not sure why, but it’s pretty special to capture the beauty in a family, especially when it’s your brother’s family. I never imagined Justin growing up and being so tender and loving. I love how he welcomes Tayley with a warm hug after spending the afternoon away from her and checks over her every bug bite with great care and concern.
Jamie’s husband Gabe and my husband Perry have become fast friends over the years and I was so pumped that he was able to make the trip as well. He was such a good sport and we all had a great time celebrating the 4th together!!!

Congrats Mary & John!
When the rain cleared we ventured back to Burwell and stopped at the Burwell Livestock Market where Cody works with his family and the young couple began their basis of their relationship. Kayla had taken a job across the street from the Livestock Market at the Vet Clinic and they must have thought that each other was pretty cute, because the rest is history!!!
Congrats on your engagement and upcoming wedding!
]]>
They have set a wonderful example for their ever expanding family and I wish for them many more years together!
I was so excited at how prepared everyone was, we got started early and finished with plenty of time for the kids to play in the yard and them to enjoy music together as a family!
]]>Travis, his wife Erin and son Gus moved here from Sioux Falls in November, where Travis learned his trade. Check out his website www.craftsmancreek.biz for more info!. Erin is our new Family Nurse Practioner (FNP-C) at West Holt Medical Services and Gus is their adorable little guy featured on a previous post! Please stop by to say hello, introduce yourself and welcome his family to town. Below is a photo of Travis, just as you’ll meet him in the studio or recognize him on the street!
Please Join Travis at his Chamber Open House on June 16th @ 1o:00 AM.
The large table above is 9 feet long by 44 inches wide! It’s so gigantic that I photographed it in his studio instead of mine!
This is a custom coffee table, requested by Travis’ father. This was actually photographed in my studio but wouldn’t have made the corner if it was any bigger.

]]>His family has a beautiful little farm place which is absolutely perfect for a little boy who loves his horses and the outdoors! His 6 month pictures are featured on my new marketing/branding material and the combo of his pictures and what Corina Nielsen has designed for me, encompass my style, my favorite colors, well ME!
Jake has beautiful curls that I love and gorgeous dark eyes.

A recent trip to Chadron to pick up my sister-in-laws college stuff, warranted a quick trip north to Hill City, South Dakota for a ride on the 1880′s Train. Almost 2 years, ago when I was pregnant with Case, we stopped here on our way home from a family wedding in Rapid City. We happened to drive through and were able to watch the train leave Keystone. I already knew our boys were in love with trains and vowed that we’d be back to actually ride. The boys loved it and now we can’t wait to see how beautiful it is in the fall!
I’ve wanted to start adding in some camera info so here it is! Canon EOS 7D, 24-70 f2.8L lens. Train: f/9 ISO 200 1/80th sec at 66mm. Window: f/4.5 ISO 640 1/100 sec at 70mm. Oliver: f/2.8 ISO 200 1/80th sec at 45mm.
Buffalo: Same lens as above at f/4.5 ISO 500 1/2000th sec @ 75mm. Antelope: Canon EOS 7D, 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L lens at f/5.6 ISO 200 @ 275mm

Even though I took a lot of pictures, it was hard running around giving shots and trying not to trip over ropes or get stepped on by horses. I even tried carrying my camera in one hand and my vaccination gun in the other, a little hard when sometimes it took two hands to squeeze due to my sore thumb (shut it in the door of the dually 2 days prior!).
Look closely and you’ll see the clouds in the bottle! And, yes, the brands appear upside down. You (I) couldn’t actully see the brands the right way due to the smoke. If you ever have a chance, check out Nebraska brands. It’s a pretty neat site but I prefer to peruse the old brand books instead.
I love these of Barb, Case and Perry with the farm in the background.
Shortly after we were done, Perry took my little boys (Ian and Case) for a ride. They couldn’t handle sitting in the back of the Yukon XL when the horses were in plain site. Case just oozes with excitement when he gets to ride. He’s great at getting them to move. “Trot, Trot,” he says!
Thanks to everyone who helped! Hopefully our California visitors had a great experience and enjoyed their time back in Nebraska.
]]>This weekend occurs once a year for us and as our families grow, the weekends get shorter and shorter. Next year we’ll plan for a blow out of a good time!

]]>I became an a volunteer photographer with NIMLDTS some time ago and hadn’t received a call until recently. I didn’t know what to expect, no one does. It was tough and I hope that through the images I have created for this family, that I am helping them in some way. Please take a moment to pray for these families.
Below are the contact/awareness cards that I will be providing our local Avera St. Anthony’s hospital, as we meet to discuss making the program more aware to our communities.

My open house was amazing! I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew people were sick and there were ball games in town, but so many people showed up! I was tickled pink!
I gave away several cake pans with my logo on them. These came from Grafted Tree Engraving in O’Neill http://www.graftedtree.com/ and were awesome! They came with cookie mixes that Oliver and I had made for his preschool classmates and home made soap from local creator Curie Mincer http://www.alabasterboxsoap.net/. Next was a custom photo bracelet and a free sitting fee!
Here were the winners!

My best friend from high school, Jenny, she is amazing, she came on Wednesday and became my nanny/cook/egg picker/lunch room enforcer. She was everything I didn’t know I needed! Barb & Amelia helped watch the boys. Mom made curtains. Dad hung backdrops and pictures. Perry & Kirk moved snow, several times! I had other friends drive 4 hours just to visit for the evening!
Thanks everyone for a wonderful evening!
Let me know what your favorite picture or product was!
]]>*I have 3 boys-Oliver, Ian & Case
*I love to hunt and read and don’t get to do either enough
*I was very blessed to marry into a wonderful and loving family. They care for me like I didn’t know in-laws could. They are amazing supporters of my work and help me in someway everyday! I couldn’t do it with out them.
*I like to shoot (in the studio) in my socks. Some days you may see some crazy ones!
*I love antiques and things found at flea markets!
*I love old fashioned peppermint sticks, chocolate covered coffee beans and mocha moolattes from Dairy Queen. Oh, and I LOVE Taco John’s. I even made a commercial while working at a local Taco John’s in High School!
*I think I have a wierd sense of humor. I am slow to catch onto jokes and I can’t tell a joke to save my life. Well, except for this one. “One guy walked into a bar. The other one ducked!”
*In high school I was super involved in FFA. I was an officer, a parlimentary procedure team member, I gave speeches on Piping Plovers and my favorite of all…my team placed second at State in WELDING! I am awesome at MIG and OA welding.
*Also in college, I worked as a Soil Survey Tech at the USDA, basically I ground up dirt from all over the world. It was a “dirty job”.
*My college degreees are in Agriculture. Crops, Diversified Ag, AgEconomics and AgBusiness.
*I met my husband at SCC in Beatrice. He tried to pick me up while eating Welch’s fruit snacks and bragging about going mudding. I love Welch’s fruit snacks, mudding and Perry!

*I love trapshooting!
Finally, finally, got my little family together for our family picture! This was supposed to be done weeks before Christmas, but thanks to the stomach flu it got postponed. Anyway, it’s ready now for all to enjoy! Hope everyone has a beautiful day!
